2000 Legislation

101st Tennessee General Assembly
1999-2000

Two pieces of legislation of interest to homeschoolers. HB2028/SB2219 would have allowed licensed teachers to be exempt from the LEA registration deadlines and late fees for homeschooling. It never moved forward. The second was HB3149/SB2425 truancy legislation which came out of an incident in Memphis. Truancy regulations regularly assume all students will be in brick and mortar classrooms at certain times. Homeschoolers are regularly out and about in the community during those times and so there is potential conflict. There was actually an incident where a homeschooler was picked up in the Memphis area and so this legislation was moved in order to clean that up. See the Incident Page under Shelby County for details. This legislation passed with exemption for homeschoolers.
