August 1999: Calabretta:
CALABRETTA v FLOYD
U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals
#9715385 While not exactly a homeschool issue, the entry into a
homeschool home and search of these children were of concern to lots
of us. The Calabretta's eventually prevailed.
August 1999: Homeschoolers Adapt Well to College:
From The Daily News Journal, Murfreesboro,
http://dnj.edge.net/index.ez?viewStory=5818
NASHVILLE (AP) -- Their high school experience might
seem sheltered, but home-school graduates generally don't have any
more trouble adjusting to college life than those from public
schools.
Susan McDowell, managing editor of the
Peabody Journal of Education at Vanderbilt University, acknowledged
little research has been done on the estimated 1.5 million to 1.7
million home-school students nationwide.
"But what there has been has
been positive, or at least neutral," said McDowell, who
researched the relationships between home-schooling
mothers and children for her
doctorate. "They seem as a group to be very
adaptive.

Efforts to Quash Homeschooling Fail
This WorldNetDaily article details the dustup in
Lauderdale County in the fall of 1998. A new Federal program to combat
truancy, school officials and a local judge were all a part of this
incident where two homeschooling parents were arrested. One of the
results of this whole incident was the Jeter Memorandum .
12/16/99
Sonlight's John Holzmann asks Mike Farris
(HSLDA) about criticisms
raised at Home Education Magazine .
More particularly about his conduct regarding Wisconsin's
homeschool laws and allegations Dr. Raymond Moore .
Unfortunately for posterity, Sonlight discussion boards
where this exchange took place have been wiped clean of this
exchange between Farris and Holzmann. Mike was
essentially non-responsive. John said he'll ask more
specific questions for Mike to respond to but such wasn't to
be the case. In January of 2000 Sonlight "disassociated"
itself from HSLDA. While Sonlight customers can utilize an
HSLDA discount number via Sonlight, Sonlight has decided to
stop promoting HSLDA. You can read a bit more about this on
the
2000 News page.
Fall 1997:
Seelhoff:
Carol Lindsey Seelhoff (Gentle
Spirit Magazine) sued and won a lawsuit charging conspiracy
under the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. This is homeschool news
because the defendants were well known figures in homeschool
circles.
Briefly, the
defendants took it upon themselves to exercise "church
discipline" over Ms. Seelhoff, who was not under their
authority. This discipline included, seemingly, the attempt
to take over her very successful magazine for the benefit of
the two magazine publishers who were defendants.
