 TnHomeEd's original e-list rules

1. Please stay on topic (homeschooling and education in general) as much as possible. You are also encouraged to post information regarding various events that you believe homeschoolers would be interested in.

2. Extend grace when reading and replying to posts. Sometimes a quick response is regretted latter (I know this from experience.) The idea is to communicate not win the argument.

3. Verify and cite whatever information you share. I'd like the information on this list to be reliable, uplifting and useful.

This sharing might also include things like dealing with toddlers, "concerned" relatives, recommendations regarding curriculum, church related schools, tutors and the like, or how to keep from pulling all your hair out. While events, articles, questions and answers regarding Tennessee homeschooling and education take precedence you are free to pass on to the group articles regarding homeschooling and education otherwise, that you believe Tennessee homeschoolers would be interested in.

4. Please do not forward to the list what is essentially internet junk mail (advertisements, cute stories or joke lists, virus warnings and miscellaneous alerts) as these things may inconsiderately clutter member inboxes. While it may be brand new to you--folks who've been on the web for a while have probably seen it before--at least a dozen times if they're active on several lists.

If, for your own purposes, you'd like to verify any of the forwards you get you'll find that http://www.urbanlegands.about.com is an easy to use reference place. Type key words into their search box and you'll be amazed at how many of them are not true. A stop there will keep you from looking foolish.

5. Intolerance of any religion or non-religion will not be allowed. Violators will be placed on moderated status. Take your time and choose your words carefully. While you may think someone's viewpoint is ridiculous it is possible to disagree without belittling people or their beliefs. Religion is, for the most part, off topic.

6. Subject lines should be accurate. If you're in the digest mode please make sure the subject line shows the actual topic instead of "Digest 123". If the post applies to a particular area of the state it's helpful to include that in the subject line. If the topic has wandered off the original topic the subject line should be amended.

7. Please cut and paste your response out of consideration for your fellow list members. We all don't need to receive copies of the entire digest and those on digest don't appreciate having to scroll past multiple copies of the same posts.

8. Attachments are automatically removed from all posts. You'll have to cut and paste the text you'd like to include in your message.

This is done because:

  • Viruses are often sent via e-mail attachments. No attachments--no viruses.
  • Not everyone on the list will appreciate waiting the length of time involved to receive a large file, such as a graphic, only to discover they didn't really want it in the first place. Multiplied by the hundreds of folks on the list and that's a lot of time and irritation.
Check with the list owner if you are uncertain what to do.

Jump in and participate! You may think that what you might contribute to the group isn't much but let me assure you that NO question is too dumb. The elders in homeschooling still learn a thing or two from the less experienced ones. Homeschooling changes and just because it's never been done that way doesn't mean it can't be now. It's imperative to have a variety of voices in order to begin to understand the variety of ways to homeschool as well as the variety of homeschoolers. The part you are holding, while seemingly insignificant, may be just the piece someone else needed to complete the puzzle they were working on. So please share--for the benefit of us all.
